Sunday 25th September – bike ride **** around St. Antonin Noble Val – 16.3 miles 16.45 kts max out 2 hours 45 minutes - cloudy with showers

A cloudy morning but looked like it might brighten up. We had breakfast and then walked up to the town to have a look at the market and visit the tourist information. There was no obvious signs of the market until we got past the old church when suddenly the whole road through the town and in the square were full of stalls selling the usual mix of vegetables, rotisserie chicken, baked goods, clothes, handbags, herbs and spices. We stopped to have a look at some amber jewellery, the only stall to catch our eye, especially some pieces of green amber which we hadn’t seen before but we didn’t buy anything. We stopped at the tourist information and got some leaflets on the area and a cycle map. We bought some bread and an almond croissant in a boulangerie because we didn’t fancy any from the outside stalls, too many flies and people sneezing!! There were a lot of English voices and some very loud Americans! As we returned to the van we thought we were going to get a soaking because the sky was incredibly black over the Gorge!! We managed to get back and spent the next couple of hours relaxing and reading our books. We ate some lunch then decided to brave the weather which still looked a bit iffy even though the rain had stopped long before. We got the bikes off and pedalled out of the town over the Aveyron road bridge and soon found a small road/track running along the river taking us to the next village up – Feneyrols. We crossed the Aveyron again via the suspension bridge and had a cycle round the completely deserted village, not a soul about. It had started to drizzle again but it didn’t put us off having a look round at the stone houses and the old bikes which had been turned into flower holders. There was a historic castle and a sign nearby pointed us back down to the river bank for our cycle path, on the opposite side to the trip here. Mag pinched a few ripe figs from an overhanging tree as they are one of her favourites :) We had to shelter under some trees for a short downpour but were soon on our way again, passing the church for Feneyrols which is a long way out of the village. I was sure we would end up on a steep climb up the cliffs going back on that side of the river but the track took us right along the river all the way back to St. Antonin Noble Val. We snaked our way through the old town narrow streets and managed to dodge the very drunk American who was shouting and swearing at another man walking up the road! When we saw him later he was muttering something about the mafia – he was really out of it! It was then, after completing bike ride number 2 that we found the cycle map in a car park! Through finding it we discovered that bike ride number 1 would take us down the river in the opposite direction to another bridge. We decided to give that a go as well and were soon right on the river bank and bumping over tree roots and rocks on the dual foot/cycle path. We crossed over the bridge shortly after passing a huge forest adventure park with huge high rope walks etc.. Returned to St. Antonin and back over their bridge having completed a total of just over 16 miles and being out nearly 3 hours. A nice way to spend a drizzly Sunday. We could have just sat in the van but that would be boring! Went past the van for a few hundred metres to have a look at the weird weir! It is a horseshoe shape and covers the whole river which is really wide at this point. You can swim there if you want to but we gave that a miss!
